Claus has a background in the building trade were he gained his City & Guilds Carpentry & Joinery qualification in 1987.
Further qualifications include diplomas as Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA), Green Deal Advisors (GDA) and Retrofit Coordinator.
Claus became more seriously involved with retrofitting properties in 2009 when he was inspired by the talk of Andy Simmonds, CEO of AECB and architect in Hereford about the Passivhaus retrofit of his own house. So Claus decided ‘to up his game’ and push himself further to deal with retrofit projects.

He decided to upgrade on the theory as well by completing a Retrofit Coordinator diploma at the Centre of Refurbishment Excellence (CoRE) in 2015, which he updated with the PAS2035 certification in 2019.
